American Avocet in the Dunkirk Harbor on July 29th. Found and photographed by Gale VerHague. This time of year it is sometimes rewarding to check beaches after thunderstorms. These storms will frequently ground birds temporarily as they migrate through our region.

This lovely American Avocet graced the Erie Shore at Barcelona Harbor on the 20th. The bird was found and reported by Brian Webb and photographed by Kyle Brock later in the day.

Joshua Ketry recorded this unusual Forster’s Tern at an even more unusual location...inland from Lake Erie in Cattaraugus County at County Side Gravel in South Dayton. Notice the pearly upper wing as well as the dark eye patch. Interestingly, this species is more likely than Common Tern inland at this time of year; in fact, most times of the year!

Seen on the 1st, this adorable Yellow Warbler fledgling gave sure evidence for the Breeding Bird Atlas III project that this species successfully bred at Beaver Island SP.
