Originally found on the 1st by Seth Winkleman, this adult Franklin’s Gull has continued on and off at the Olcott Pier into the 3rd, when Willie D’anna took this smashing photo! This species is quite rare in the spring locally.

Phil Mills located this hulking American White Pelican out on Strawberry Island on the 1st. Earlier in the day Alec Humann reported a group of 7 from Buckhorn Island SP. This is a species whose frequency of occurrence has increased in the past decade and some anticipate future local breeding attempts!

Knox Farm SP has been a reliable location for Eastern Meadowlarks. Wendelin Long composed this winsome image there on the 3rd.

June 3rd provided sunshine and this alluring and continuing adult Franklin’s Gull at the Olcott Pier. We don’t often get to see this species in all of its springtime glory, including the pale pink breast. Photo taken by Willie D’anna.

This newly hatched Spotted Sandpiper was photographed by Brad Reinhardt along Quarry Road, Port Colborne on the 13th. Note the size of this chick’s feet! These precocial chicks need to be able to run and keep up with its parents shortly after hatching!

This 2nd summer Little Gull has taken up temporary residence along with a flock of subadult Bonaparte’s Gulls on the Olcott Pier, Niagara County. Willie D’anna took this image on the 17th.

Clay-colored Sparrows are once again breeding at Krull County Park in Niagara County. Don Dixon documented an adult bringing food to its hatchlings on the 15th.

Andrea Heine captured the understated elegance of an adult Black Tern at the Tonawanda WMA on the 14th. This species is hanging on in and around the Iroquois NWR complex and will hopefully continue to do so for years to come!

Karen Lee Lewis photographed this Ruddy Turnstone on the 3rd at Olcott Pier. Karen’s sharp eye caught that this bird was not only banded with a USFW silver leg band but also with a colored leg flat witty an alpha-numeric sequence. By submitting her data, she found out that this bird was originally banded on May of 2016 in Sussex County, DE and aged at the time as at least 2 years old; making this bird currently at 11 years old! Amazing!

Common Nighthawks are tricky when it comes to capturing a sharp image. Nathan Stimson did quite well with this bird on the 4th at the Audubon Community Nature Center, Chautauqua County.

An incredible 19 Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks were reported by Jeff Pyskaty on the 19th in Orleans County. Joel Strong alerted the birding community and many folks, including Brad Carlson who took this photo, were able to enjoy these birds until the evening when they were reported departing.

Andrea Heine captured the entire group of 19 Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks in a single image. These birds settled near a pond in Lyndonville on the 19th.

Black-bellied Whistling Ducks have been expanding their range rapidly into the Northeast and Midwest over the past decade; seemingly with extra fervor over that last 5. Jeff Pyskaty found a group of 19 on the 19th near Lyndonville. Andrea Heine, who took this photo, was one of the fortunate ones who got to see this largest group ever reported in the BOS Study Area.
