Originally reported on the 1st by Bill Massaro, this Brown Pelican has continued to entertain birders on the Niagara River between Unity Island and Aqua Lane Park. Phil Mills captured this marvelous image on the 3rd at the north end of Unity Is.

Bill Massaro and his wife were driving north on the 190 on July 1 when they both spotted a Brown Pelican flying overhead! The bird has continued for several days in the general area. Bill took this photo on the 3rd as the bird rested on the pier at the north end of Unity Island. This same pier has hosted a Cattle Egret and the famous Elegant Tern from 2013!

On the 1st, Gale VerHague located this Western Willet on the beach at Dunkirk Harbor after torrential rains. This bird is likely an early migrant headed back to the eastern seaboard after breeding/attempted breeding in the prairies of central North America.

This family group of Sandhill Cranes was documented by Bill Massaro on the 5th in North Collins. This location was discovered last year and its great to see these birds were again successful in rearing a colt!

Found by John Gustafson on the 10th, this American White Pelican has continued for close to a week at Bemus Point, Lake Chautauqua. Nathan Stimson took this image on the 12th.

Nathan Stimson captured this image of the Bemus Point American White Pelican getting harassed by an adult Caspian Tern on the 12th. This comparison gives one the comprehension of the massive size that this pelican species is!

Continuing from May at this location, this adult Yellow-crowned Night-Heron posed obligingly for Jeremy Pete on the 12th along Owen Road, Iroquois NWR.

VP of the BOS, Vicky Rothman, discovered this mega Western Kingbird on the 14th along Youngstown-Wilson Road. It was later discovered that this bird was feeding nestlings and was paired up with an Eastern Kingbird! Nathan Stimson took this image on the 18th as the Western returned to the nest with a food item - a praying mantis!

The Olcott Pier on Lake Ontario also hosted a Brown Pelican this July, here on the 2nd, as photographed by Brad Carlson. Willie D’anna initially reported this bird earlier in the day on the 2nd.

Alan Bloom superbly photographed the Niagara County Western Kingbird, found by Vicki Rothman, on the 15th. Note the white outer tail feather, pale gray head and proportionately small bill - all field marks to separate this from other yellow-bellied kingbirds.

On the morning of the 21st, Charlie Kaars found a beautiful adult Western Sandpiper at Woodlawn Beach SP. Don Dixon caught up with the bird later the same day and took this photo.

Charlie Kaars found and photographed this adult Western Sandpiper at Woodlawn Beach SP on the 21st. Note the bright rufous tones to the cap, cheek and back as well as the arrowhead-shaped spots on the breast and flanks. This bird continued for several days allowing many local birders to enjoy this rarity.

Jaeger Rocks along the Fort Erie shoreline at the source of the Niagara River has long been a magnet for unusual birds. This Whimbrel paused for a few days beginning on the 21st and continuing until the 26th. The bird was first reported by Aline McNulty and Heidi Fast. This photo was taken by Walter Parker on the 23rd.

The Iroquois NWR headquarters building out on Casey Road maintains several Purple Martin nesting racks. Andrea Heine photographed these birds at that location on the 26th - the male has caught what appears to be a Green Darner.

This stunning combo of a male Indigo Bunting perched among flowers of native Swamp Milkweed was taken by Gale VerHague on the 6th near the Town of Sheridan, Chautauqua County.
