This classic adult Broad-winged Hawk shows off its single broad white tail band and dark trailing edge to the wings as well as the primary tips. Sue Barth photographed this individual at Winter’s Pond, Langford on the 10th.

One of those birds that is near-mythical…the Connecticut Warbler. One of the most difficult warblers to detect during migration, Steve Pitt captured this image at Beaver Meadow Audubon Center on the 11th.

The algae/weed mat floating on Chautauqua Lake has provided refuge for many uncommon species of shorebirds this fall. This Wilson’s Phalarope was photographed on the mat by Nathan Stimson on the 7th from Lakewood Community Park.

This image features three species of shorebirds. The Stilt Sandpiper in the lower left is the ‘best’ bird of the group. The largest bird with open wings is a Greater Yellowlegs and the other three are Lesser Yellowlegs. Nathan Stimson took this photo on the 7th from Lakewood Community Park, Chautauqua Lake.

Truly exceptional was this one-day-wonder Say’s Phoebe at the home of Jeffrey Reed on the 17th along Maine Hill Road, in Cattaraugus County!

Another image of the Say’s Phoebe from Cattaraugus County on the 17th. Jeff Reed took this photo of the bird as it fed in his backyard along Maine Hill Road. Note the very dark gray throat and upper breast contrasting with the pale pumpkin belly.
