As if gulls weren’t tricky enough…add hybrids and color variations! This interesting gull appears to be a leucistic Ring-billed Gull (leucistic beginning with an ‘L’ which goes along with the ‘L’ in the word lighter). Steph Foraker photographed this bird at Unity Island on the 10th.

Nelson Park at Niagara-on-the-Lake is a great location to observe winter waterfowl from. Karen Lee Lewis captured this image of Redheads coming in for a landing while a Long-tailed Duck and White-winged Scoters clear space for the new arrivals. (Jan 17)

Lapland Longspurs (right) will mix in with flocks of Snow Buntings and Horned Larks (left) as they feed along road edges after a snowfall. Farm fields that have been freshly manured are another favorite foraging location for these ‘field birds’. Brad Reinhardt took this image on the 28th near Lincoln, Ontario.
