This apparent Tufted Duck X Scaup was a great find near the Old Fort Erie waterfront parking lot by Walter Parker on the 3rd. Note the short, bushy crest and brownish smudge on white flanks.

The White-winged Scoter is the most frequently encountered scoter species within the BOS Study Area during the winter months. Ryan Griffiths photographed this individual on the 2nd at Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Found by Ella Hicks on the 14th, this male Barrow’s Goldeneye has been enjoyed by birders at Jordan Harbour, Niagara. Brad Reinhardt took this photo on the 17th.

This Long-eared Owl was a nice find by Brad Reinhardt near Niagara Falls, Ontario on the 13th. This species, along with several other owls, are very sensitive to disturbance while roosting during daylight hours. Because of this, you should NEVER publicly post an owl’s location - just share with trusted friends!

On rare occasions, hybrid ducks are found locally, in this case a Common Goldeneye x Hooded Merganser. Ryan Griffiths photographed this individual at St Catharines on the 15th (originally found by Daniel Greaves on the 14th).

This photo embodies winter waterfowl wonderment! So many stunning species of ducks winter along the open waters of the Niagara River. By late winter, these birds begin courting and offer a fantastic opportunity to watch and listen to their displays! For many years, Reinstein Woods has hosted a pair of Barred Owls. These birds have become semi-acquainted with bipedals and can be observed with care from a distance. Stephen Hu took this photo on the 15th.

This spectacular adult male Rough-legged Hawk was photographed by Nathan Stimson at the Jamestown Airport on the 22nd. This buteo can be aged/sexed by plumage characteristics, Adult males, as in this case, by the distinct, multiple, tail bands, checkerboard-patterned underwing coverts, breast and belly with a dark bib.
