MONTHLY photos contributed by our members for October - 2026.

Incredible! Last year’s amazing record of the Broad-billed Hummingbird that was overwintered indoors locally and released where it was captured in April has returned to the SAME FEEDERS. Tom Riley’s feeder documented the hummer on September 30 (photo from Tom on the 2nd) and now the bird has been back to Kathy Tucker’s home feeders a street away!

The long-staying Scissor-tailed Flycatcher found by Gale VerHague at the Dunkirk Airport has continued into October! This is by far one of the most cooperative rarities ever! Gale photographed the bird on the first of the month at the same location.

Joel Strong found and photographed two Nelson’s Sparrows at the Tonawanda WMA on the 4th. This species is a regular but rarely detected migrant through the BOS Study Area. The first week or so of October is the best autumn window to seek out this species.

Another image taken by Joel Strong of the Nelson’s Sparrow at Tonawanda WMA he found on the 4th. Note the rich, ochre buff color on the face, throat and breast with diffuse streaking.
